Adaptive-mesh research
Adaptive meshes for real-space density functional theory at the University of Rochester.
The work
At the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, I contributed to MELIORA, a C++ code that uses finite elements to solve density functional theory problems. I worked on transferring the computed solution when the mesh changes and implemented checkpoints so a simulation can resume from a saved state. I used MPI, deal.II, and PETSc in this research.

An adaptive mesh can devote more resolution to a region where the field changes rapidly. That makes the placement of computational effort a design decision in its own right.
